The Yellow Jersey

The leader in the first Tour de France in 1903 was awarded a green armband. The yellow jersey (the color was chosen as the newspaper that created the Tour, L’Auto, was printed on yellow paper) was only added to the race in the 1919 edition. The rider who has taken the most time is called the lanterne rouge (red lantern, as in the red light at the back of a vehicle so it can be seen in the dark).
