Bike Racing is Born
In the 1870s, the penny-farthing, or high wheeler, was developed. Its large front wheel increases the potential top speed as the bicycle travels the equivalent of its diameter with each pedal stroke - the pedal is attached to the front wheel. Depending on the rider’s leg length the front wheel could have a diameter up to 1.5m (60 in). The sport of bicycle racing was born on these dangerous contraptions.
