Exhibition: Speed Records
Italian physicist Galileo Galilei is usually credited with being the first to measure speed by considering the distance covered and the time it takes. See how speedily you can complete this puzzle.
The fastest wind speed ever recorded was during the passage of Tropical Cyclone Olivia on 10 April 1996 when a wind gust was registered at 408 km/h (253.51 mph) on Barrow Island, Australia. Wind speeds within tornadoes may greatly exceed this speed but have never been accurately measured as the violent wind would destroy the instruments.
