Usain Bolt holds the world record for 100 meters with a time of 9.58 seconds. His average speed was 37.57 km/h (23.34 mph), truly incredible. However, average speed does not describe the speed variations that take place during shorter time intervals, and his peak, or instantaneous speed, was closer to 44 km/h (27.34 mph). When driving a car, you can always tell your instantaneous speed by looking at the speedometer whereas you need to look at the trip computer to find the average speed of a journey.

However, speed only tells you how fast an object is moving, it doesn’t tell you in which direction it is moving. The speed and direction of an object is called velocity. This exhibition explores different aspects of speed so see how fast time speeds by uncovering the great photos we have compiled for you.
